Frank Lill & Son, Inc. was awarded the General Contract to construct a new power plant providing in excess of 400,000# St./Hr. to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill’s Steam Loop. The plant was built around two (2) new 205,000# St./Hr. package boilers. Our contract included all construction and purchasing activities required to take the plant from anchor bolts through completion. This project was performed in parallel with another contract awarded to Frank Lill & Son, Inc. by the University of North Carolina to add black start capabilities to an older pre-existing power plant.

Black Start Generators Project
2008-2009


This multimillion-dollar project consisted of the installation of two 12.4kV, 2 MW black start diesel generators and all associated electrical and controls equipment. Frank Lill & Son, Inc. was also charged with providing space allocation for a third generator in the same location.

Boiler Number 5 Replacement Project
1999-2001


Frank Lill & Son, Inc. was awarded the General Contract for the complete electrical and mechanical construction required to add an additional 250,000# St/Hr to the Central Heating Plant at UNC Chapel Hill. The project consisted of the field erection of a new 250,000# St/Hr watertube boiler with outlet steam conditions of 400 psig at 700 degrees F. The contract included procuring, installing, and testing of fans, breechings, a deaerator, tanks, and pumps. This contract also included are the installation and startup of fuel oil air compressors and building ventilation systems. Other mechanical work included pipefitting and welding, insulating of piping and equipment, balancing of new equipment, as well as startup and testing.
